Shelley Thomas (Moreno)

Shelley Renee Moreno (Thomas)

Born: January 23, 1961

Died: December 10, 2019

On Tuesday, December 10, 2019, Shelley Renee Moreno (Thomas) passed away peacefully at the age of 58, after a long and valiant fight with ovarian cancer. She spent her final days surrounded by her loving family members. Shelley was born on January 23, 1961, in Harbor City, California.

She moved to Utah at the age of five and graduated from Timpview High School.

She married her sweetheart, Jesús Fernando Moreno, on September 15, 1979. Shelley taught herself to speak fluent Spanish while living for a year with her husband’s family in Madrid, Spain. They returned to establish a home in Bakersfield, California, where Jesús began a family-based business and they raised their ten children. Jesús and Shelley were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 20, 1989. They relocated to Texas in 2012, where they started a new chapter in their lives. With her youngest child in high school, Shelley was employed by the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District in several capacities. Her most recent title was as Administrative Assistant for Student Services. Eternal progression and setting an example was important to Shelley, and during her most invasive period of cancer, she continued her education.

She graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Applied Science. She further achieved a Master of Science in Learning Technologies. In addition to her formal education, Shelley taught herself to sew, which enabled her to create something special for the people she loved. Shelley served in various assignments as a member of her church, and dedicated her life to serving those in need. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, and often sang with the choir. Faith was always a driving force in her life, which gave her the strength to endure cancer treatments with a positive attitude for five years. Shelley was known for her cooking, creativity, quick-wit, and empathy. She is remembered by all who knew her as a Christ-like example of unconditional love and service.

Shelley is survived by her husband of 40 years, Jesús Fernando Moreno, their ten children Rosamber (Jan Schefferlie), Roxanna (Diego) Cáceres, Jesús (Alison), Francisco (Nicole), Raquel, Nicolas, Sebastian, Gabriel (Lauren), Rebeca (Luis) Rodríguez, Alexander, and 15 grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Rita Kay Noel (David Butler), and her siblings, Jeff (Karin) Thomas, Mark (Cindy) Thomas, Stacey Dilleshaw, Susan Thompson, and five Thomas stepbrothers in Utah.

A viewing will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4000 Nazarene Dr., in Carrollton, Texas, on Monday, December 16, 2019 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The funeral service will be held immediately following the viewing. The graveside ceremony at Rolling Oaks Cemetery in Coppell, Texas, is reserved for family. Merit Memorial will be handling the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance www.ocrahope.org. Checks can be mailed to Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, PO Box 32141, New York, NY 10087-2141.

I remember Shelley being on the debate team and one of the brightest people I knew in High School.  Because she was a member of Timpview '79s Supreme Court, I had a chance to work with her in student government. So sad to hear about her passing.  Thanks Tom, for sending her obituary.  We will all miss her.  I noticed that Shelley recently earned a Masters Degree in 2018 in Learning Technologies, which is the same Masters Degree I earned.  The University of North Texas has always been known as one of the Top 10 schools in that area (along with Utah State University).  I wish I would have had a chance to talk to her about her experiences, aspirations, and why she chose that program.

Shelley, you will be remembered.  Thank you for sharing your light with us!
